Design Tutorials Introduction

It’s Jeremy and Connie here. Thanks so much for subscribing to our design tutorials and through this series of tutorials, we’re going to give you a number of practical and actionable techniques to improve your website design!

Why should you improve your website design?

Well, to make yourself look good of course!

Believe it or not, even if your site may not a personal website, it is a form of expression of yourself.

What we discovered after communicating with thousands of Weebly users such as yourself, is that creating an appealing, updated, and functional website design is challenging…

Were You Born with an Eye for Design (Nature vs Nurture)?

For the majority of website builders, creating a “good design” is an intangible and daunting task

A lot of our friends start to magically lose confidence when we ever discuss design… it’s as if the idea of “good design” is some sort of kryptonite for a lot of people!

Staring at a blank website canvas and trying to design something awesome is not easy.  How many times have you seen a design that looks beautiful, and then you feel that it’s almost impossible for you to create your own awesome design? Is this happening to you?

[Note from Jeremy: I didn’t have any background nor talent in design, so I was in the exact same boat as you. All is not lost… keep reading!]

Most people believe that you’re either born with a talent for design, or you’re pretty much screwed (from a design perspective!)

There has to be an easier and better way to learn how to create good looking websites!

You Can Create a Good Design for Your Website

Rather than settling to believe that either you are born with design talents or not, we’ve set out break down this “art” into a number of practical principles so you can improve your website in a step-by-step system.

We’ve invested hundreds of hours into studying and researching what makes a great website design, and we want to share our experiences and what we’ve learned with you.

Through this series of tutorials, we’ll share with you some rules and guidelines we use to create our designs, and we’re confident that these will help you make big strides in improving your website design!

So What Can You Do?

Creating an appealing website can be boiled down to a few easy-to-follow steps if you understand the core purpose of a website. The sole purpose of your website is to communicate a message to your target audience.

When a site is created with good user experience in mind, it will appear more beautiful, looks more credible, builds a deeper engagement with your audience, increase conversion, and get more sales or leads. [Think about how Apple does it]

When you switch your focus from wanting to create a beautiful website, to creating a website that can effectively communicate your message, it removes the mystique of design and gives you a clear road map to follow.

Yes we know, this sounds so fluffy and theoretical. How about some practical and actionable steps??

No worries. We’ll be laying out our system over the coming few days (watch out for our emails arriving into your inbox). We’ll discussing not only theory, but also practical techniques with examples so you can implement them on your website right away.

Preview of Design Tutorials Over the Coming Few Days

Here’s a quick preview of what we will be discussing over the coming few days

1) Content Overload and Layout Organization

Overstuffed website is the most common mistake that both experienced and novice website owner makes. People are often scared to leave things out, so they try to jam everything into the site.

We’ll get into this in details in the next session, what you can do to better organize your website with examples.

2) Have Personality

A website should be an extension of you, your company and/or your organization. Branding and communicating your message online is so much more difficult to than doing the same thing in the physical world where you can have face-to-face interactions.

You want your website to stand out from the crowd, to be remembered and be able to communicate your brand and message without using too many words.

In our tutorial about creating a website personality, we’ll show you a few practical techniques on how to let create a glowing and noticeable personality / brand for your website.

3) Over Design

This is the opposite of website lacking personality, but rather, putting a website on steroids!

Time and time again, we see many people stuff their website with scrolling text, flashing images, hundreds of slideshows and widgets. When there are too many moving parts, they distract your audience from the real purpose of your website.

It is important to guide your audience through your website instead of just dumping dozens of flashing elements in hopes that something will catch their interests.

We’ll go over this concept in a few days with examples to illustrate our point. We’ll also present you a few actionable tips so you can prevent over designing your website.
